Shareware Review: Overflow
Very rarely do I see shareware applications that spark my interest. Applications that are well done graphically, have a good user interface, and are useful everyday. Today I found an application that meets all of the above criteria. Meet Overflow 2.0 by Stunt Software.

Overflow is an application & document launcher for Mac OS X. Using Overflow, you can access these items extremely quickly without having to fish through the Finder. It's very similar to the "Launcher" app back from Mac OS 9, only with more style.

Remember this?

The most important thing about these kinds of apps is accessibility. And Overflow does not skimp on that one bit. You can access Overflow using only the keyboard (hotkeys and keyboard commands), only the mouse, or a combination of both if you want to. Simply clicking an icon will open it.

Another important part is customizability. In Overflow, you can sort apps and documents into different groups, letting you keep related items close together. Have a large monitor and don't want your icons to be tiny? Icons are resizable. Want more rows or columns? No problem, just resize the window while in "Edit" mode. You can even change the background color of the window if you'd like.

Customizability Heaven. Note to developer: this window is resizable - whoops!

What's Cool: Looks great - reflections and glows on the icons help a lot. Extremely customizable. Not bloated.
What's Lame: Cmd-A keyboard shortcut adds a new item instead of selecting all text. Mediocre icon - not really something I'd want to keep in my dock.

Overall, I could see Apple doing something like this in the near future. Although we have the dock, it becomes cluttered really easily when you have more than 20 apps/documents in it. Overflow helps keeps those less important apps less than a few clicks away.

★★★★
Overflow is available from the Stunt Software website and can be purchased for $14.95.

like this post? go ahead, digg it.
I just downloaded this application a few days ago and I already use this app constantly. On my old eMac I just use to fill the dock with 30+ items and made the dock tiny to fit it all on my screen. Now, I can put my top 10 applications on my dock and use Overflow for my less important items. I tried Quicksilver before and was disappointed with the bloat; it took as much RAM as dashboard! This thing is tiny and has the a useful feature of Quicksilver that allows you to type the app to open it.

A thing that you didn't really put emphasis on was the usefulness of Overflow for documents/projects. If you have ever put documents in your dock you know that the dock doesn't handle it well at all (like having to scroll over dock for titles). With Overflow I can just group and turn on always show titles in the preferences and it is good to go.

I hope you do more reviews in the future!

I agree with both David and Dustin, Overflow 2 is extremely helpful for managing the dock and projects/folders. Applause for the developer.
I like it too. If you're interested you may want to read Membranophonist’s Ramblings' post about Overflow. Some tips to make it even better.
